ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM (ECLSS)

June 2004

The Environmental Control Life Support Systems (ECLSS) is a
green cylindrical test chamber, measuring approximately 2m x
1.5m, which has been designed to monitor four physical
parameters: carbon dioxide (CO2), oxygen (O), temperature and
relative humidity, in replicating the physical environment required
for travel into space.

Intially, up to three Starchaser personnel at a time spent up to two
hours sealed into the ECLSS test chamber. In order to push the
system still further 1 volunteer was strapped in for a record
breaking 6 hour stint.

The remit, over the period of one day, was to monitor an ECLSS
volunteer so that variations in a number of biological parameters
could be measured.

These included pulse, respiration, ECG, non-invasive blood
pressure (NBP), end tidal carbon dioxide (etCO2), pulse oximetry
(SpO), and temperature (of the body and the ECLSS chamber).

The system worked perfectly and the volunteer emerged, stiff from
sitting for so long, but happy and well. Further tests will be carried
out once all the data has been evaluated.

Starchaser Industries are currently conducting full scale tests of
their ECLSS on human subjects inside a sealed test chamber
approximating the internal volume of their X PRIZE space capsule.

Following calibration and instrument set up this first round of
testing has centred upon obtaining baseline data from the
respiration of no fewer than six human subjects.

Environmental data is being recorded on oxygen uptake, carbon
dioxide production, relative humidity, ambient pressure and
temperature.

Versions of the ECLSS are being used to maintain a breathable
atmosphere and comfortable living environment for the test
subjects.

Interfacing the ECLSS with the Sokol spacesuits that the
Starchaser Astronauts intend to use for manned spaceflight will be
the next objective.
