17 July 2006 - at Farnborough International Airshow in England, a new name for the Southwest Regional Spaceport was announced. It is being changed to Spaceport America, said Rick Homans, New Mexico Economic Development Secretary.
"Decades from now there will be many more spaceports around the world. A name like Spaceport America signifies the heightened importance of the New Mexico facility and the fact that it really helped to launch an entire new industry," Homans told SPACE.com.
That name will need the blessing of the New Mexico Spaceport Authority, which Homans heads, and an agenda item to be taken up within the new few meetings of the Authority, he explained.
"Continually, thereís a greater acceptance of the industry. People are viewing it as an industry versus something thatís eccentric or bizarre," Homans said. In the last year alone, he added, thereís been a series of positive developments, such as the recent Bigelow Genesis-1 launch, Oklahoma obtaining a spaceport license, along with continued progress by public space travel firms, Virgin Galactic and Space Adventures.
